Charlotte Sprouts Sweet Staches For Charity Through Second Annual Mustaches For Kids Fundraiser
Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) November 7, 2008 -- Mustaches for Kids Charlotte (http://www.m4kclt.org) announces the start of its second annual growing season, including a different quirky event over each of the next four weeks.
Mustaches for Kids (M4K) Charlotte will again be raising money for DonorsChoose.org, a registered 501(c)(3) charity that provides funding for teacher-submitted projects to improve North Carolina public schools, one classroom at a time.
M4K is a national volunteer-run organization started in Los Angeles in 1999 to do good and have fun by growing mustaches for children's charities. Through the years, M4K has enlisted the efforts of hundreds of brave "Growers" who have collectively raised almost $1 million for children's charities.
Last season, M4K Charlotte raised $56,000 - the most raised by a M4K chapter. To keep the momentum going this time, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has given $245,000 to support a nationwide mustache challenge.
M4K chapters in Knight Foundation communities are eligible to win matching dollars for fundraising and participant numbers as they are achieved, to directly support local classrooms in each area through DonorsChoose.org.
"The Knight Foundation's involvement with M4K came about in large part due to what we were able to accomplish with fundraising last season in Charlotte," said Joe Romanelli, President of Romanelli Communications (http://www.romanelli.com). "We're going head-to-head with some big cities to keep our title as the top fundraising M4K Chapter. I'm really looking forward to the challenge."
Each year, during the four-week "Growing Season", Growers sprout sweet mustaches. Per M4K bylaws, they shave their faces, except for the mustache, a minimum of one time per week and solicit donations from friends, family, co-workers, and people in the community (like getting pledges to run a marathon, without the exertion, cramping, or dehydration). M4K calls it a facial hair marathon.
To get involved, simply visit www.m4kclt.org and sign up. Shaving Day, Wednesday, November 12, 2008 is the official launch of the Growing Season. The event begins at 7:00 p.m. at Emerson Joseph, located at 221 S. Tryon Street in Uptown Charlotte. On that day, all participants must shave their entire faces clean. During the competition there will be Growing checkpoints on Thursday, November 20th, Tuesday, November 25th, and Thursday, December 4th.
On Friday, December 12, 2008 the Sweetest Stache winner and the Worst Stache winner will be announced. Both will receive a year's worth of Breckenridge Brewery beer.
